IPHIGENIA CRASH LAND FALLS ON THE NEON SHELL THAT WAS ONCE HER HEART (A RAVE FABLE)

CONCEPTUAL DESIGN & MODEL
This modern retelling of the story of Iphigenia gives voice to her perspective. Her journey is one of actualization, yet she is doomed to repeat a role that others have chosen for her without any care for what she wants. She is defined by her youth and beauty, despite neither of those things really being about her. She is used as a symbol rather than seen as a person. I think that perception of femininity is unfortunately something that very often occurs all around us. I was reminded of the iconic Britney Spears photoshoot, which opened the debate of whether she was manipulated or forced, or if she made those choices on her own. A degree of shame and victimhood was assigned to either option - she couldn’t win. She was either selling her body, or being taken advantage of. And that’s the reality of being a young girl: your choice is often stripped from you.
Because this story felt so universally applicable, I chose to set the play in her bedroom, to emphasize the naivety and intimacy of being a little girl. The bedroom spills out into a grunge street that she ventures into the more she is able to see the world for what it is, leaving her innocence behind. The script also features heavy use of projections, which I utilized by projecting onto the bedroom walls.
