BARBECUE
WRITTEN BY ROBERT O’HARA
UNCSA PRODUCTION - SCENIC DESIGNER
Barbecue tangles with a lot of ideas about performance, stereotypes, and biases. The script flashes back and forth between a white cast and a black cast playing the same characters, and scenes that take place in the real world vs. scenes that take place in a film within the play. Because these elements spoke to the director and I, my design imitates a soundstage containing an outdoor park. Everything is a facade - which highlights the comedic, or affecting honesty that finds its way through in the dialogue of the characters.
